Our Story
I Guess you can say our story is not a story at all, but a journey that involves many places, many stops, and most importantly many people. No one ever gets anywhere on their own, and we are no different. We did not know our story had started until years later.
It started in San Angelo, Texas in the late 1960’s with my dad and a group of other dads in a dirt field beside the Lake View Chief’s football stadium. The local high school, San Angelo Lake View needed new football uniforms and did not have the funds to purchase them. So, what brings people together in Texas better than football, kids, and barbeque? This group of dads quickly decided that cooking some briskets and selling plates would be the quickest way to raise the needed funds, and not mention the most fun for the dads involved. Not knowing that a tradition had been started, this became an annual fundraising event. This group continued to cook until around 1974, and then I found myself in charge. Having watched my dad who was a car parts salesman, Boy Scout leader, and a Foster Parent; I had the greatest map to follow. It was only natural that my dad was one of the original dads involved. Through the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s thousands of dollars were raised for the athletic program at our old school, but during this time I began cooking for other schools in Texas. I also started cooking at other benefits and began competitive cooking. It was in the 1970’s that I started creating different seasonings that I used and gave to people. As coaches came and went, I began getting calls from all over the state from coaches asking for the rubs and asking to start this tradition at their school. It was at this point that I realized I had something different. One of my best friends, a former Lake View High School Head Football Coach, called and asked if they could sell the rubs as a fundraiser for the Georgetown, Texas High School Athletics Program. I guess you can could say, this is where the next part of the story started. After the team’s success with the fundraiser, we were able to place our products in some small stores and then in 2013 we were able to have our products placed in H-E-B. We quickly grew from 3 H-E-B locations to 150, but not without a lot of hard work. Over the last 3 years, we have grown from 250 retail locations through the United States to over 425 locations. As a family business, we have had help from all members of the family to grow, even my mother helps as needed. As our company has grown, it has allowed to reach out and help even more people. We sponsor many different competitive cookers in the state of Texas, the current Texas State High School State Champion Grilling team and 3rd in the National High School Grilling Competition, the Rankin High School Red Devils Grilling Team in Rankin, Texas. We also sponsor all the cookers in the State of Texas for the Texas Municipal Police Association. These cookers provide food for charities throughout the state, as well as for officers in times of need.
We feel that it is our purpose and obligation as a company and as a family to continue to help those that are in need. As our story and company continues to grow, so will our dedication to helping others. A portion of all sales goes to a dedicated fund to help nonprofit organizations on the local, state, and national level.
It may seem that our story is 50 plus years in the making, but we feel that we are just getting started.
I did not wake up one morning in the 1970’s and say I wanted to open a seasoning company, it only happened because of relationships and the desire to help those who are in need.
